The Terminator (1984)

Bodycount[]

Notes:

  • Research was based on a previous one done by admin on a Russian Terminator-themed forum.
  • Although first flashback is technically a dream sequence, it never contradicts Kyle's statements and the dream is very likely verbatim repeating his own experiences and is a PTSD flashback.
  • Large robot tech is accounted separately, while cyborgs are inserted in the main bodycount on accounts of them having living human tissue (some of which might even be preserved in endoskeleton form as they likely need living neurons in the system).
  • Skeletal human remains seen in the scenes of future war were accounted on shot-for-shot basis, something indigenous to this research and its direct predecessor.

Deaths[]

Count Name  Cause of Death Killer Notes
1-4. Skeletal remains (at least 4 people) Unknown, casualties of future war between humanity and the machines.
TheTerminator1984Skulls01
Accounted mainly by skulls, although in this particular shot other bones are evident. The shot is also seen repeated in the second flashback and believed to be part of the same event, so it was not accounted second time.
5-6. Skeletal remains (at least 2 people) Unknown, casualties of future war between humanity and the machines.
TheTerminator1984Skulls02
Two skulls are seen in a blink-and-miss moment before place goes in the minor explosion caused by a blast from an Aerial Hunter-Killer. The shot seems to be filmed with miniatures.
7-17. Skeletal remains (at least 11 people) Unknown, casualties of future war between humanity and the machines.
TheTerminator1984Skulls03

TheTerminator1984Skulls04

TheTerminator1984Skulls05
Eleven skulls are seen crushed by the wheels of HK (Hunter-Killer) Tank. The shot was filmed with miniatures and the tiny skulls were sculpted out of plaster. The shot is also seen repeated in the first flashback and believed to be part of the same event, so it was not accounted second time.
18-20. Skeletal remains (at least 3 people) Unknown, casualties of future war between humanity and the machines.
TheTerminator1984Skulls06
Three skulls could be seen before the minor explosion from the aerial HK blast.
21-31. Skeletal remains (at least 11 people) Unknown, casualties of future war between humanity and the machines.
TheTerminator1984Skulls07

TheTerminator1984Skulls08
Eleven skulls could be witnessed and accounted under different levels of lighting. Plaster miniatures of different size and detail were used to film the shot in order to widen the depth and trick the audience into believing the space is much larger then it actually is.
32. Punk (Brian Thompson) Heart ripped from the body with bare hands.
TheTerminator1984Punk01

TheTerminator1984Punk02

TheTerminator1984Punk03
The Terminator T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) - 1. First kill in the movie and the whole Terminator franchise. Character is called Rick in the main novelization.
33-34. At least two taxidermied animals Presumably hunted off-screen.
TheTerminator1984Taxidermy02

TheTerminator1984Taxidermy03
At least two out-of-focus animals are evident in the background of Alamo store. One seems to be some kind of a Marten, while another is second to indiscernible.
35. Taxidemized goose Presumably hunted off-screen.
TheTerminator1984Goose
The most evident (and prominent) taxidermied animal in the Alamo store.
36. Pawn Shop Clerk (Dick Miller) Shot point blank with a Franchi SPAS-12.

TheTerminator1984SarahLouiseConnor03
The Terminator T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) - 3. Likely died from the first shot alone.
38-41. Skeletal remains (at least 4 people) Unknown, casualties of future war between humanity and the machines.
TheTerminator1984Skulls09
Seen being run over by an HK-Tank at the beginning of the first flashback.
42. Skeletal remains. Unknown, casualty of future war between humanity and the machines.
TheTerminator1984Skulls10
A skull is seen in the lower right corner of the shot. Succeeding shot is that of 7-17.
43-44. Skeletal remains (at least 2 people) Unknown, casualties of future war between humanity and the machines.
TheTerminator1984Skulls11
Seen as Kyle Reese and unnamed female resistance fighter message each other with gestures and start crawling.
45-47. Skeletal remains (at least 3 people) Unknown, casualties of future war between humanity and the machines.
TheTerminator1984Skulls12
Seen as Kyle and unnamed female resistance fighter crawl through ruins.
48-51. Skeletal remains (at least 4 people) Unknown, casualties of future war between humanity and the machines.
TheTerminator1984Skulls13
Briefly seen in a shot between explosions and blasts are four skulls, one of them being a very small part of such.
52. Female Resistance Fighter Shot with a plasma cannon, exploded.

53. Resistance Driver/Gunner Breaks neck and/or blunt force trauma during the car accident caused by plasma cannon blast.
TheTerminator1984ResistanceDriverGunner01

TheTerminator1984ResistanceDriverGunner02
Aerial Hunter-Killer Hits his head on debris at least three times before car stops moving, although the way corpse remains in the cockpit suggests broken neck. Even if damage was not lethal, car starts to burn down shortly after and it is strongly hinted that only Kyle survived.
54. Sarah Ann Connor (Paula Cross) Shot 6 times point blank with "large caliber weapon".
TheTerminator1984SarahAnnConnor

Various early drafts of sequel (as well as threequel) include Vukovich as a survivor of the attack, severely crippled due to injuries sustained. However since the ideas were scrapped, they are not considered canon.
76. Police Officer Shot off-screen.

Corpse could be witnessed twice as Kyle and Sarah and then T-800 himself walk through a corridor. It does not match any of the previously seen victims in place or looks. Finishing the massacre with this officer perfectly matches the number of victims given in Terminator 2: Judgment Day: seventeen. It is likely that scene was given a close re-watch in the process of writing the sequel to match the events seamlessly.

Debatable[]

Count Name  Debated Death? Killer?
1. Resistance soldier Some kill counts, including Movie Body Counts and Carnage Counts suggest that resistance soldier was killed by an Aerial HK blast in the prologue. Although what is shown was quite brief and it is hard to tell, blast was quite far from the soldier and we cut to another shot too quickly to suggest that he is, indeed, a casualty. From what we can tell analyzing the scene frame-by-frame, solider narrowly escaped both plasma blasts. Considering how powerful such were shown to be in a later flashback, if he would have been killed by one, he would have been blasted into small pieces, which is never evident in the film. What is pictured is the last frame we see of the situation and solider seems to be very much unharmed by the closest blast.
TheTerminator1984Debatable01
2. Punk Leader (Bill Paxton) Despite his injuries cause him to go down (and judging by the impact include at least broken ribs plus severe bruises) Paxton's character hardly sustained enough damage for it to be a lethal case. In one of film's novelizations (co-written by William Wisher who co-wrote the movie as well) where the character is named "Kotex" he is suggested as a lethal casualty, with sheer impact of the blow killing him. It might be that the whole scene being fully reshot near the end of production (changing the setting to observatory from a schoolyard) eventually made the scene more vague as to whether he survived.
TheTerminator1984Debatable02
The Terminator T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger)
3. Punk (Brad Rearden) Although nothing in the movie suggests that this punk was killed or even that The Terminator had any reason to do so since he complied, in novelization T-800 seemingly kills Mark (as this punk is called there) with his compliance buying him only 14 seconds of time. Although it should be noted that novelization has too much difference from the movie to be canon, including setting this very scene at a different location (schoolyard).
TheTerminator1984BradRearden
The Terminator T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger)
4. Unknown murder There is a "Wanted for murder" poster in the police station which might be unrelated to events of the movie, however the face on the police sketch resembles Arnold Schwarzenegger, so it might mean one of the murders witnessed in the movie already.
TheTerminator1984WantedForMurder

TheTerminator1984PoliceStation17
Either unknown suspect or The Terminator T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger)
5. Policeman (William Wisher) Although some people suggested that policeman might have been killed by blunt force trauma, it was hardly of needed impact to be lethal. Moreover, sticking his hand in front of the head instinctively might have helped policeman to sustain much less damage to the head.
TheTerminator1984PolicemanWilliamWisher
The Terminator T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger)
6. "Afghan" Detective Vukovich mentions that "last week" Dr. Silberman was questioning a guy who set his "Afghan" on fire after "screwing" it. It is slightly unclear what Vukovich meant, as word Afghan in conjunction with "his" may refer to either a type of blanket or a dog of Afghan Hound breed. It is most likely the latter as he was arrested, but it's not clear whether it was lethal if it was the case. Unknown suspect
7. Police Officer At one point in police station as Terminator shoots two sessions from AR-15 a scream is briefly heard after second one, implying that someone was shot. It is never shown explicitly what happened and in most versions, scream heard at the moment is by the same voice that was heard when one of the previous policemen was shot, so situation is slightly unclear.
TheTerminator1984PoliceStation12
The Terminator T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger)
8. Police Officer Although counted as a kill in some cases, such as Carnage Counts, upon closer inspection it seems that officer was likely just ducking to avoid the shards of glass or due to being wounded by some of them.
TheTerminator1984PoliceStation19
The Terminator T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger)
9. Police Officer Although yet again accounted by Carnage Counts, policeman seems to be fleeing from the shots, not receiving ones. Something, however, sparkles on his uniform at one point, which might be a reflection of some sort or indeed a shot.
TheTerminator1984PoliceStation20

TheTerminator1984PoliceStation21
The Terminator T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger)
10. Rat Considering T-800 infiltrator entered the bunker shortly afterwards and started to massacre people, it is highly unlikely that rat was ever cooked as intended when it was caught. However certain probability that it was at least killed is there since rat stopped squeaking shortly after it was shown.
TheTerminator1984Rat
11. Taxidermied fish Apart from taxidermied bird there is also what seems to be a fish hanging at Sarah's mother cabin, but details are rather unclear due to how the scene was lit and there is also possibiliy that it is a decorative fish which is just a plaster sculpture.
TheTerminator1984Sarah'sMother
12. Tanker Driver (Wayne Stone) While the case was accounted in several bodycounts, including All Outta Bubble Gum account the driver as a kill, he is shown to be moving long after Terminator knocks him down. Some people theorized he was run over by his own tanker shortly after, but that makes little sense considering positioning of the body.
